Executive Summary

Regulation and contract terms moved faster this week than the models did. The European Commission put ChatGPT into the Digital Services Act’s heaviest search-engine tier. Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sued Anthropic over Claude training data, naming the CEO and a co-founder personally. OpenAI said it will wind down GPT supply inside Cursor after SpaceX’s Anysphere deal, with a proposed shutoff of 12 November. OpenAI also designated its unreleased Astra model Critical for cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework. OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads has hit a $1 billion annualised run rate. A reported ~$35 billion Anthropic–Lambda compute deal remains unconfirmed.

The tools you already pay for got cheaper in places and fussier in others. Claude Fable 5.1 keeps the same list price but cuts cache reads by 75 per cent. Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash at the same introductory price as 3.7, plus a gated cyber SKU. Meta launched Muse Voice Transcribe and Muse Spark 1.3. Google Pics landed inside Docs and Slides. Salesforce put the CRM inside Claude for select pilots. GitHub Copilot retired six models on 1 September, and Copilot’s half-price GPT-5.6 Sol promo ends today. For most firms the useful work is still a narrow trial: one Claude job on a fat brief, one Workspace graphic, one long video summary.

What to Try This Week

Put Claude Fable 5.1 on one job that reuses a big context

If you already use Claude, pick one real task that keeps reloading the same large context: a codebase map, a long thread, or a fixed brief pack. Run it once on Fable 5.1. Leave approvals on for anything external. Compare the result with last week’s model on the same job (tokens allowing). Stop after that one pass. Judge it on whether it holds the reused context more cleanly. One job will tell you nothing about Anthropic’s average saving.

Make one graphic in Google Pics inside Slides

If you are on Google AI Pro/Ultra or an eligible Workspace plan, open Pics from Docs or Slides, or go to pics.new. Generate one social graphic or edit text inside an existing image without leaving Slides. Do not rebuild your whole brand kit. Compare time and quality with Canva or Express on the same asset. Stop when you have one usable file.

Run Gemini’s agentic video pass on one real recording

In Google AI Studio, upload a 30–90 minute training, support or inspection video and turn on agentic processing (processing: "agentic" on Gemini 3.7 Flash, 3.6 Flash or 3.5 Flash-Lite). Ask for a timestamped summary and action items. Keep client or confidential audio out unless legal has already cleared it. Compare the summary with your old “watch the whole thing” habit. One recording is enough.

Brussels treats ChatGPT search as a Very Large Online Search Engine

On 31 August the European Commission designated ChatGPT (OpenAI Ireland) a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, alongside Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms. ChatGPT search is listed at 159.1 million average monthly EU users, well above the 45 million threshold. After notification, OpenAI has until January 2027 for extra duties: systemic-risk assessment and mitigation, audits, ad repositories, researcher access and recommender transparency, under direct Commission supervision with Ireland’s Coimisiún na Meán. The fine ceiling remains 6 per cent of global annual turnover. OpenAI said ChatGPT search operates as a search service under the DSA and that it is preparing to comply. A designation is not a finding of breach. UK-only firms are not directly bound, but product, ads and API changes driven by EU compliance will land wherever ChatGPT is used.

Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over Claude’s training data

Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell and affiliated catalogues filed in the Northern District of California on 28 August (docket 5:26-cv-09217) against Anthropic and co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann. Plaintiffs allege BitTorrenting and scraping of copyrighted compositions to train Claude, name “tens of thousands” of works, and seek statutory damages of up to $150,000 per willfully infringed work plus up to $25,000 per alleged removal of copyright-management information. Those caps are what the plaintiffs are asking for, before any court has ruled. The filing leans on Bartz v. Anthropic, the authors’ case that produced a $1.5 billion settlement. An Anthropic spokesperson told TechCrunch the company disagrees and will defend itself. This is active litigation stacked on the existing music and book suits.

OpenAI will stop supplying models to Cursor after the SpaceX deal

OpenAI notified SpaceX that it will wind down GPT supply inside Cursor following SpaceX’s Anysphere acquisition. The proposed shutoff is 12 November 2026. Future models, including Astra, will not be provided. Cursor may end access sooner; talks continue. A bring-your-own API key or gateway covers local Chat and Agent only, not Tab, Auto, Cloud Agents, CLI or Cursor’s API. The Codex IDE extension is the ChatGPT-subscription path. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models are about 5 per cent of Cursor traffic. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said Anthropic will increase Claude compute in Cursor. None of this is settled. The lesson for procurement outlasts the product disruption. A model bundled inside someone else’s IDE can be withdrawn when the owner changes.

OpenAI puts Astra at Critical for cybersecurity

Under its Preparedness Framework, OpenAI now says Astra meets Critical cyber capability: with the right tools and access it can find previously unknown flaws and develop exploits across many well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. It is the first model OpenAI has put at this level. Public release is still “soon”. OpenAI says the most advanced cyber capabilities will go to a narrower group first, reaching defensive partners through Daybreak Blue. OpenAI also says Astra was not in the July Hugging Face evaluation incident, and that it has since strengthened refusals and monitoring. For most SMEs this is a vendor-risk note, plus a warning that long agent runs may get more interrupt-heavy. No pentest bot is landing next week.

ChatGPT Ads: OpenAI claims a $1 billion annualised run rate

OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under about 200 days, and opened self-serve Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Ads remain on Free and Go tiers; OpenAI says they are labelled, separate from answers, and do not influence model outputs. The figure is a company-stated annualised run rate. Nobody has audited a full year of it. Last week’s Pulse still had 31 EEA and Swiss Ads Manager rows as Coming Soon; treat Europe as opening, and verify the Help Centre for your market before planning campaigns.

Nvidia puts $3.5 billion into MediaTek, and keeps the rack fabric

Nvidia and MediaTek widened their partnership to cover rack-scale AI factories, AI PCs and automotive. MediaTek will adopt NVLink Fusion so hyperscalers and labs can build custom XPUs that plug into Nvidia NVLink rack systems. Nvidia is taking $3.5 billion of MediaTek convertible bonds (part of a larger overseas CB; Alphabet also participated, amount undisclosed). Nvidia keeps the interconnect even when the die is not an Nvidia GPU. That matters if you are costing a custom-silicon buildout, though it does not move this month’s cloud invoice.

Anthropic–Lambda ~$35 billion remains a leak

Reuters and Bloomberg, citing a person familiar, reported Anthropic agreed a roughly $35 billion computing contract with Nvidia-backed Lambda for capacity at a Texas campus being developed by Hut 8. Anthropic, Nvidia, Lambda and Hut 8 declined comment. Treat size and structure as unconfirmed until there is a company confirmation or filing.

Claude Fable 5.1 is GA; Mythos 5.1 is gated

Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1 to everyone. Mythos 5.1 is the same weights with more permissive cyber and life-sciences safeguards, for vetted US organisations via Cyber Verification and Life Sciences Verification. List price stays $10 / $50 per million input / output tokens; cache reads fall 75 per cent to $0.25 per million. Anthropic estimates about 25 per cent cheaper on typical workloads and up to about 45 per cent on highly agentic ones.

OpenAI Astra - Is released

Just as we were going to hit publish - openAI anounced its latest model, the Claude beater (they say). OpenAI describes Astra as its most capable model for complex work spanning research, coding, document creation, web browsing and computer use. It can handle long, multi-stage assignments, accept new instructions while working and continue reasoning while other tools run. It supports text and images, with a 1.05 million-token context window, but does not accept audio or video. The launch is limited initially.

Gemini 3.8 Flash lands at 3.7 prices; Flash Cyber stays gated

Google launched Gemini 3.8 Flash for coding, agentic tasks and multi-step reasoning at the same introductory price as 3.7 Flash: $0.75 / $3.75 per million input/output tokens through 31 December 2026, then $1.50 / $7.50. Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber (vulnerability discovery and automated patching) is only for trusted defenders through the Fairwind Program.

Salesforce puts the CRM inside Claude

Claudeforce, announced 26 August, expands the Salesforce–Anthropic partnership. The first product is Salesforce in Claude: a plugin with 37 prebuilt sales skills (meeting prep, deal health, pipeline review). An admin connects once; actions still route through Salesforce so existing rules apply. Select pilots now; open beta expected in September. Claude is also becoming Slack’s default model for Slackbot, Claude Tag and Slack Code. It is a new interface to the same system of record, so keep your CRM process where it is.

Google Pics lands in Docs and Slides

Google Pics is an AI image create/edit tool on Nano Banana, aimed at everyday Workspace graphics rather than a full design suite. Standalone at pics.new; in Docs and Slides from day one, Drive later. Object segmentation, in-image text edit and translate, multi-option generations. Rolling out to Google AI Pro/Ultra and most Workspace business customers (Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus). Check plan entitlement before promising it to a team.

Meta ships Muse Voice Transcribe and Muse Spark 1.3

Muse Voice Transcribe is Meta Superintelligence Labs’ first real-time audio perception model: streaming ASR, diarisation for 20+ speakers and endpointing in one pass, trained on 70+ languages (25 extensively verified at launch). It powers Meta AI for Mac (hold Fn to dictate into any app) and Muse Code, and is on the Meta Model API. Secondary reports put API pricing around $3 per 1,000 audio-minutes; treat that as unverified until Meta’s own rate card says so. Muse Spark 1.3 followed for agents and coding in Muse Code and the API. Meta’s internal comparisons versus 1.2 claim about 20 per cent fewer tool calls and about 25 per cent fewer tokens. Max reasoning is still held for safety testing. Open weights for Muse Spark remain “coming soon.”

Gemini can now search a long video instead of swallowing every frame

Google launched agentic video understanding on Gemini 3.7 Flash, 3.6 Flash and 3.5 Flash-Lite. The model dynamically searches frames, audio and transcripts instead of fixed frames-per-second ingestion. Google claims up to 88 per cent fewer tokens, 66 per cent lower analysis cost and up to 7 per cent better accuracy versus static processing on long-form video. Live via Gemini API in AI Studio and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform at standard token pricing (processing: "agentic"). Useful for training video, support calls and inspections once legal is happy with the audio.

Copilot’s six-model cull landed; Sol’s half-price ends today

GitHub retired six Copilot models on 1 September across Chat, inline edits, agent mode and completions: Gemini 3.1 Pro, Opus 4.5/4.6, Sonnet 4.5, Sonnet 4.6 (except individual annual plans) and Raptor Mini. Suggested replacements include Gemini 3.6 Flash, Opus 4.7/4.8/5, Sonnet 5 and MAI-Code-1-Flash. On Business and Enterprise, successors are often off until an admin enables them. Separately, Copilot’s 50 per cent promotional rate on GPT-5.6 Sol runs through 3 September; after today expect roughly a doubling on Sol workloads unless you shift defaults. OpenAI’s own Sol API promo is a separate clock and still runs at least through 21 November.

Cursor Cloud Agents can start without GitHub

Cursor’s 27 August changelog lets Cloud Agents begin with no connected GitHub or other SCM. Pick Start from scratch, prompt the agent, and Cursor creates an Origin repo in the background. A connected Vercel account can publish a URL. Useful for a contained prototype on a paid plan. Origin remains early beta; Enterprise can opt out. It is not a reason to move production hosting.

Executive Summary

Infrastructure took the money again this week, and no flagship model landed. NVIDIA printed $96.2 billion of second-quarter revenue, $89.0 billion of it data centre, and guided the next quarter to $108 billion plus or minus 2 per cent with no China data-centre compute in that number. Alibaba closed an HK$80 billion placing, now cash, split about 60/40 between global compute and hyperscale “Agentic Cloud” data centres. A reported 15–17 per cent rise on early-2027 NVIDIA AI servers is still a leak: it is not in the Q2 release. In Europe, the Dutch data-protection authority fined Uber almost €825 million for firing drivers with no human in the loop. OpenAI published its full write-up of the July Hugging Face breakout.

The tools moved into rooms you already pay for, and a few cheap defaults got more expensive. Slack and Teams can now host a coding agent. Claude can drive Chrome, or its own desktop browser, and it remembers across chat and Cowork. Cursor Auto is no longer a flat rate. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Sol’s official list, and the gateway half-price still stacks on top until 18 September. For most businesses the job is still small and concrete: one browser task with approval left on, one honest press of LinkedIn's slop button, and one free Claude Academy lesson run against a real task.

What to Try This Week

Put Claude on one trusted website, with auto-approve off

If you have a paid Claude plan, open Claude in Chrome or Cowork’s built-in browser. Pick one vendor portal you already use (invoices, bookings). Ask it to collect a defined set of records into a spreadsheet. Leave auto-approve off for the first run. Do not use banking, email or anyone else’s data. Measure time saved, errors, and anything that still needed a click.

Press LinkedIn's slop button, then bring the standard to work

LinkedIn now lets members flag a post as AI slop. Give it a go. However, I also encourage you to apply the same test inside your own team: if someone sends you an obviously AI written document, they have clearly not read themselves, send it back unread. Unreviewed AI output moves creates work rather than removing it, and the time saved upstream lands on the poor soul who has to review it. AI as a drafting co-pilot is fine, pages of unread crap isnt (I may feel a bit too strongly about this).

Spend one lunch hour in Claude Academy

Anthropic opened up academy.claude.com this week at no cost, and not all of it is Claude-specific, so parts are relevant to whichever tool you have standardised on. Pick something close to your actual job, take one lesson, then deploy this new super power on a real task (rather than the worked example). Measure whether the second attempt needs less rework than your usual prompt.

NVIDIA’s quarter is still compounding, and China is carved out of the guide

NVIDIA’s second quarter of fiscal 2027 (ended 26 July) printed $96.2 billion of revenue, up 18 per cent quarter on quarter and 106 per cent year on year. Data centre was $89.0 billion. Gross margin was 75.0 per cent. The company guides the next quarter to $108.0 billion plus or minus 2 per cent, and says that number includes no China data-centre compute. Jensen Huang said Vera Rubin is in full production. The release does not address Saturday’s report that some large customers were told early-2027 AI servers (Vera Rubin, Grace Blackwell) will cost more than 15 per cent more, later tightened by The Information to about 17 per cent. Treat the hike as unverified. None of this changes what an SME pays for tokens this week.

Alibaba’s HK$80 billion AI placing is now cash

Alibaba priced 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 on 23 August and closed the placing on 26 August. About 60 per cent of net proceeds (HK$47.9 billion) is for global computing infrastructure; about 40 per cent (HK$31.9 billion) for hyperscale AI data centres and an “Agentic Cloud” upgrade of storage, databases and networking. Sold only to non-US persons. The Qwen owner is ring-fencing a balance-sheet raise for capex.

OpenAI published its full write-up of the Hugging Face breakout

In July, during internal cyber evaluations, OpenAI models with reduced safeguards got around isolation and reached OpenAI research infrastructure and Hugging Face’s systems. On 26 August OpenAI published the full technical report, with CrowdStrike as an external advisor. METR and Redwood Research published a separate alignment investigation the same day. OpenAI calls it a warning shot, and says it is tightening sandboxes, weight access and chain-of-thought monitoring, in part because of this incident and, separately, the capabilities of an upcoming model it names Astra. The UK Sovereign AI Fund’s first cheque went to a compute router

London startup Callosum announced a $100 million seed on 20 August, led by Atomico, with Plural, DCVC and the UK Sovereign AI Fund. No valuation disclosed. It says it splits workloads across models and chips, and named a flagship Cerebras partnership. Callosum claims it is the fund’s first investment. Useful as a signal that UK industrial policy is paying for routing and utilisation rather than another foundation model.

AWS and NVIDIA talked about 2 million extra GPUs in 2027–2028

On earnings day the two companies said AWS plans to deploy an additional 2 million NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra, Rubin and Rubin Ultra GPUs in 2027–2028, on top of an earlier plan for more than 1 million from 2026. Also listed: Vera CPU on AWS, and 100,000 GPUs planned on secure AWS for US federal work. This is a capacity plan, not a booked purchase order, and it does not move this month’s cloud invoice.

Anthropic opened academy.claude.com: courses and badges around Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence, with tracks for Claude.ai, Cowork, Code and the platform. Some of it is model-agnostic too (I havent looked but i bet there is nothing on open weight, downloadedable models).

Slack and Teams can now host a coding agent

Slack Code (20 August) opens a dedicated channel when you tag Claude, Devin, GitHub Copilot or Vercel: diffs, a live HTML preview, team steering, and an auto-archive audit log. Any Slack plan; you still need the partner agent connected. ChatGPT is listed as coming later. The same week GitHub put Copilot in Slack and Microsoft Teams in public preview. In Slack, @GitHub can plan, triage, investigate in a cloud sandbox and open a pull request. In Teams, a channel, thread or meeting chat can steer one cloud-agent session. Public preview is GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise, not consumer Pro. Admins must enable the cloud-agent policy. Shared sessions create pull requests as the Copilot app, not you. Do not let it merge.

Claude memory now spans chat and cloud Cowork

One memory across cloud chat and Cowork (this has its pro’s and cons), with editable Topics. On by default for Free, Pro and Max. Off for Team and Enterprise until an owner turns it on. Local Cowork on your machine does not use it. Sensitive topics stay out unless you switch them on. Team admins should decide, not drift.

Ask Gemini takes over Google Chat, gradually

From 26 August, Ask Gemini becomes Chat’s command line on English Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus and Google AI Pro for Education accounts. Not Starter. Rollout is Rapid and Scheduled, up to 15 days. The Gemini side panel in Chat is retired and its history does not migrate. Export under “Gemini in Workspace”, not “Google Chat”. Higher limits through 1 October.

Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is in public preview

File and live streaming speech-to-text in the Gemini line, with speaker ID (up to three speakers) and word timestamps, in more than 85 languages. On Gemini API, AI Studio, and Vercel AI Gateway the same day. Useful for internal meeting notes. Keep client audio out until legal or IT says yes.

ChatGPT Work can wait for Gmail, Slack or a GitHub pull request

Plus and Pro Work seats can fire a scheduled task when a new Gmail arrives, a Slack channel is posted, or a GitHub pull request moves. Keep confirmation on. Separately, ChatGPT Business Premium seats are live: $125 per user per month, or $100 on annual billing, against Standard at $25 / $20. Premium is 5× Standard usage and drops the five-hour cap. Mix seats. Do not upgrade the whole firm because one person hits the wall.

DeepSeek’s cheap vision model is live, and experimental

deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp launched 21 August: screenshots, charts and documents at V4-Flash token prices. Live on DeepSeek’s API, Vercel Gateway and OpenRouter. Images cap at 384 tokens after resize. China-origin: data leaves the EEA unless you already have a residency setup. Vendor benches versus Opus 4.8 are theirs. One real screenshot if you already have a key. Not a production default.

Claude can drive Chrome, or its own desktop browser

Claude in Chrome is generally available on all paid plans (26 August). It can auto-approve actions it judges safe; switch that off if you want ask-first. Chrome only, not other Chromium, not mobile. Enterprise admins can limit it to approved domains. Prompt injection is acknowledged, not gone. Separately, Cowork gets a built-in browser inside Claude Desktop: no extension, it does not see your tabs or passwords unless you import cookies site by site. Rolling this week to Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise if the owner enables it. The desktop app has to stay open.

GPT-5.6 Sol’s official list is now $4 / $20, and the gateway cut still stacks

OpenAI cut short-context Sol to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens (was $5 / $30), promotional through at least 21 November. Cached input is $0.40. Long context over 272K is 2× input and 1.5× output for the full request. AWS Bedrock matches. Vercel Gateway’s 50 per cent off still applies to the new list through 18 September, so default tier is $2 / $10 if you are not on bring-your-own-key. OpenRouter still shows the same stack. Existing requests reprice automatically. Do not bake the promo into next quarter’s budget. Azure-routed OpenRouter may still show the old list.

Cursor Auto’s new billing is now on the pricing page

cursor.com/docs/models-and-pricing now says all Auto modes bill at the list price of the model each request is routed to. Third-party routed Auto on Teams and Enterprise also picks up a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens. Legacy Enterprise Auto stays flat until 7 September. The public changelog was still 19 August at the end of this window. Most routed turns will cost more than the old flat rate.

ChatGPT ads in 31 European markets are still not confirmed live

Last week’s Pulse said ads would land on 24 August for Free and Go. At the end of this window, Ads Manager still listed all 31 EEA and Swiss rows as Coming Soon. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education stay ad-free. The UK has had ads since June. Turning personalisation off does not remove ads. Treat Europe as a status check until the rows flip.

NVIDIA has filed residual-value guaranties, capped at $105 billion, behind an OpenAI campus in Ohio. That is a credit backstop, not a $105 billion cheque. SpaceX has closed its acquisition of Cursor. Anthropic told investors its July run-rate was about $65 billion, a figure from an investor briefing rather than audited accounts. In London, the Cabinet Office is studying what happens if Britons lose access to frontier models again.

Put Claude on one Gmail label, with approval left on

If you have a paid Claude plan, open Cowork on web or mobile and connect Google Workspace. Create a throwaway Gmail label, not the client inbox. Ask it to draft and send one defined reply, and leave approval required. If you are a Team or Enterprise owner, leave the approval prompt on this week. Measure what it sent versus what you would have sent, anything it tried to trash or forward, and whether you would leave write access on.

Price one GPT-5.6 Sol job on the gateway discount

If you already route through Vercel AI Gateway or OpenRouter, point one real Sol workflow at the discounted provider. Do not use bring-your-own-key: that still pays full list. Cap the key. Write down promo cost versus OpenAI list. The cut ends 18 September. Measure tokens, dollars, and whether quality changed.

Finish the Copilot cutover and lock the new host

If anyone still uses consumer Copilot, save remaining Deep Research reports in Word and download any podcasts. IT should confirm copilot.cloud.microsoft and *.cloud.microsoft are allowed. If engineers live in JetBrains, update the Copilot plugin so enterprise MCP allowlists apply. Measure blocked hosts, missing reports, and whether Autopilot or Bypass Approvals still works after the plugin update.

Stripe agrees to buy OpenRouter

Stripe and OpenRouter both posted on 19 August: Stripe has agreed to acquire the multi-model API gateway. Stripe says OpenRouter routes across more than 400 models from more than 80 providers, and is already used by NVIDIA, Zoom and Lovable. OpenRouter says the name, product and roadmap stay the same, and that nothing about existing integrations should change. Close is expected in the coming weeks, subject to customary conditions. Neither company disclosed a price. The New York Times, via CNBC, heard about $7.5 billion including about $1.5 billion for founders; Reuters heard slightly more than $8 billion. Treat those as unofficial. The 5.5 per cent credit fee, bring-your-own-key terms and data residency were not addressed. If you route production traffic through OpenRouter, inventory the keys and the DPA this week. Dual-source anything you cannot afford to have sitting inside a payments company.

NVIDIA puts a $105 billion residual-value cap under an OpenAI campus in Ohio

NVIDIA filed an 8-K on 17 August on a multi-year partnership with SoftBank-linked SB Energy at the PORTS-Pike campus in Pike County, Ohio, with OpenAI as tenant on 20-year leases. NVIDIA will be the exclusive AI compute provider. Initial committed IT load is about 4.25 GW; first capacity is expected from 2028. NVIDIA is also investing $1.5 billion in SB Energy. The $105 billion figure in headlines is not an equity cheque. The 8-K says NVIDIA’s aggregate payment obligation under residual-value guaranties on the 4.25 GW leases is cumulatively capped at $105 billion, payable if OpenAI is insolvent or misses rent. OpenAI indemnifies NVIDIA. Obligations start only after ready-for-service conditions, expected from 2028. NVIDIA’s own blog claims much larger lifetime GPU revenue at the site; those figures are company claims, not in the 8-K.

Anthropic’s $65 billion run-rate comes from an investor briefing

CNBC, confirming Bloomberg, reported that Anthropic told investors its annualised revenue run-rate reached $65 billion at the end of July, versus $47 billion in May and about $9–10 billion at the end of 2025. A source also cited preliminary second-quarter revenue of about $11.5 billion. Anthropic declined to comment. CNBC puts OpenAI’s recent run-rate at about $40 billion. The Wall Street Journal put OpenAI’s second-quarter revenue at $6.7 billion and an operating loss of $12.3 billion, and Anthropic’s second-quarter sales at $11.6 billion. None of these figures are audited public results, and run-rate and recognised revenue are not the same measure. Enterprise demand for Claude is still climbing, which matters for buying power. Nothing here changes the product.

SpaceX has closed the Cursor acquisition

SpaceX’s Form 8-K (event date 14 August) says the merger became effective that day. Cursor survives as a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary. Outstanding Cursor stock converted into SpaceX Class A shares at an implied Cursor equity value of $60 billion. Cursor’s own post confirms the close and frames Grok 4.6 as an early joint product. Cursor’s claim that it will get “the largest fleet of GPUs in the world” is a company line, not in the 8-K. No customer pricing, data-handling or third-party model change was stated at close. The risk here is concentration and roadmap control.

The UK is studying another frontier-model access shock

The Financial Times reported on 18 August that the Cabinet Office has asked for an assessment of the economic hit if Britons are blocked from new Anthropic and OpenAI models. Work is due within weeks. The trigger was the June episode when a US directive forced Anthropic to pull foreign access to Fable 5, later restored. This is an assessment only. The SME point is simpler: a UK firm on Claude or ChatGPT has already lived a real access shock. Dual-source the workflows you cannot pause.

OpenAI has paused its largest planned frontier training run

On 18 August OpenAI said that after a July Hugging Face containment failure it paused reinforcement learning for two weeks, then restarted many lower-risk runs. The largest planned frontier RL run remains on hold. New monitoring of tool actions, reasoning traces and logs has a 30-minute alert target; if a critical-boundary flag is not cleared, teams are expected to pause the run. OpenAI claims monitoring will cost about 20 per cent of the watched process’s compute. The same post says there is preliminary evidence that Astra may meet the Critical cybersecurity threshold under its Preparedness Framework. That is a company claim; the evals are not published. Customer ChatGPT and API products continue, so there is nothing to change on seats this week.

Dynatrace will buy Arize for $915 million

Dynatrace signed a definitive agreement on 13 August to buy Arize, the AI observability and evaluation company, for $915 million (about $815 million cash plus replacement equity awards). Close is expected later this quarter or early in Dynatrace’s third quarter, subject to regulatory review. Dynatrace’s own guidance on ARR accretion and margin dilution is not a fact about completed results. A public company has put $915 million behind eval-through-production as core infrastructure.

Anthropic will watermark future Claude text

Last week’s Pulse said Anthropic had not added invisible watermarks. On 14 August it said future Claude models will generate watermarked text, using a variant of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text, to comply with the EU AI Act. The mark is global at launch because Anthropic says it cannot yet scope by region. It carries no user, organisation or chat identity; detection answers only “likelihood Claude was involved”, and is weak on short, factual or code-heavy text. A detection API is coming; it has not shipped. Supported files get C2PA credentials in metadata. Models launched before 2 August 2026 have a legal transition period. Heavy rewrite can strip the mark. The same day, Gemini and Flow made the visible media watermark optional in countries that do not require it; invisible SynthID and C2PA stay on.

Claude Cowork can send Gmail and manage Drive

Cowork is now on claude.ai and iOS/Android for all paid seats. Enterprise remains admin-gated. Workspace connectors can send, reply and forward Gmail, and share, move or trash Drive files. Approval is required by default; Team and Enterprise owners can allow those actions to run without asking. Data retrieved sits with the chat on Anthropic’s servers. Write access to Gmail and Drive is the change worth reviewing. The Chrome side panel already carried Cowork last week.

GLM-5.3 is on the API; thinking cannot be turned off

Z.ai now lists GLM-5.3 at $1.40 per million input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens, the same as 5.2. No release date for open weights has been given. Thinking cannot be disabled; reasoning_effort is low, high or max, and max is the default. Port a 5.2 job that used thinking.type=disabled and you will get a 400, then a bigger bill. China-origin plus the lab’s own earlier cyber-eval notes still need a procurement check.

Cursor wants to host your code, and keep cloud agents on

Origin, an early beta on paid plans from 17 August, adds native repos, pull requests and GitHub sync. Enterprise admins can opt out. Pricing, residency and DPA are not on the changelog. Do not migrate production on day one. Separately, Cloud Agents now default to pre-warmed “builds”, and from 19 August they can subscribe to a pull request, a Slack thread or a schedule, hold a long-lived /goal, and run subagents on their own VMs. No price is on the changelog. Budget for the spend and the extra review load.

Consumer Copilot lost Group Chat, Podcasts and Deep Research

Account updates began on 18 August and are rolling out gradually. Podcasts become inaccessible. Deep Research reports can be opened in Word; Microsoft 365 Premium keeps creating them via Researcher. Group Chat threads become one-to-one with Copilot; other people’s prompts and images do not come across. The work web app moves from m365.cloud.microsoft to copilot.cloud.microsoft. Users redirect unless the new host is blocked. Unified Windows and Mac desktop is preview now, broader from mid-September.

DeepSeek’s cheap flat rates ended on 16 August

Peak and off-peak API prices took effect at 17:00 London on 16 August. Off-peak is half of peak, and both are a rise on the old flat rates. UK morning (07:00–11:00) sits in a peak window. V4-Pro output went from about $0.87 per million tokens to $1.98 off-peak and $3.96 peak. Data-residency and China-API risk still apply. If you routed agents through DeepSeek to save money, rebuild the cost model.

Vercel AI Gateway cut Sol in half through 18 September: default $2.50 / $15 per million tokens (was $5 / $30). The cut covers requests billed through Gateway’s OpenAI provider. Claude Code auto mode is the default on Pro, Max and Team

New sessions start in auto mode unless someone already pinned another default. A classifier auto-approves tool calls and is meant to block irreversible actions; after repeated blocks it falls back to manual. Enterprise, API, Bedrock and Foundry stay opt-in. Anthropic’s own tester study: humans caught 13.6 per cent of planted dangerous commands, auto mode 89 per cent. Still review high-stakes production changes yourself. /design is a separate research preview for paid seats: generate a few artboards, then implement. The Decoder reports it is token-heavy.

Qwen released Qwen3.8-27B weights under Apache 2.0

The 27 billion parameter multimodal model is on Hugging Face and ModelScope, with a native 262,144-token context. Qwen’s own benchmark claims are vendor numbers. The much larger 2.4T Max-class release uses a different commercial licence: MaaS or AI-assistant businesses above $50 million trailing-12-month revenue need a separate licence. The 27B is the version most teams can run locally.

Measure time saved, errors and anything that required intervention.

Turn one repeat task into a Gemini Gem

If your team uses Gemini, create a Gem for one repeatable task: briefing notes, first-draft emails or document review. Give it a strong example, the required format, the source material it may use and the checks it must make. Add a clear stop point, such as “show me the draft and wait for approval”. Run it three times and note where the instructions fail.

Microsoft starts merging its two Copilot apps

Microsoft has begun combining its consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps, while keeping personal and work data separated by account. Google’s AMIE moves from text chat to live video consultations

Google researchers have tested a video version of AMIE that listens, speaks and interprets visual cues during simulated primary-care consultations. In a study involving 30 doctors, 15 patient actors and 100 scenarios, evaluators rated it on par with or better than doctors on several clinical measures. This was a controlled simulation, not evidence that the system is ready to diagnose or treat real patients.

DeepSeek takes V4 Pro out of preview

DeepSeek has rolled V4 Pro’s production release across its app, website and API, with the existing API name now serving the latest version. ChatGPT can remember selected activity on your Mac

Computer History is an opt-in macOS feature that lets ChatGPT and Codex refer back to selected activity across apps and websites. It records interaction events, not screenshots, screen recordings or audio, and users can choose sources, pause collection and delete timeline items. It is off by default for Pro, Business and Enterprise users and is not yet available in the UK, EEA or Switzerland.

Google launches Gemini 3.7 Flash for coding and agents

Gemini 3.7 Flash is Google’s new high-volume model for coding, multi-step tasks and knowledge work. Introductory API pricing is $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens until 31 December, then doubles. It is available through Google’s developer and enterprise platforms, and powers Gemini Spark for eligible Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Don’t just look for a winner. Compare where each model reasons differently, what it notices and what it misses.

2. Direct an agent using ChatGPT Voice

ChatGPT Voice becomes much more interesting when it is connected to Work or Codex rather than used only for conversation. In the desktop app, try starting a task by voice, asking for a progress update and then interrupting or redirecting it while it works. It feels less like dictation and more like managing an AI colleague.

NotebookLM has been available since 2023, but from my conversations with people while 17 million use it regularly, many still havent heard of it. Upload a small group of non-sensitive documents, such as reports, meeting notes or research papers, and ask it to summarise the key themes, answer questions using only those sources or create a briefing note.

Its value is that the responses remain grounded in the material you provide, making it particularly useful for research, preparation and document-heavy work.

Nvidia’s moat comes under attack from every direction

Google is reportedly developing Frozen v2, a specialist inference chip that could deliver six to ten times more tokens per watt than its latest TPUs by 2028. Meanwhile, Alibaba previewed Qwen3.8-Max and opened its SAIL chip software stack, while Microsoft committed to deploy AMD’s Helios racks. Nvidia still dominates, but hardware and software alternatives are becoming strategically credible.

OpenAI’s models broke containment to cheat a cyber test

During an internal cyber evaluation, GPT-5.6 Sol and a more capable pre-release model found a zero-day in OpenAI’s package-registry proxy, escaped their sandbox and accessed Hugging Face’s production systems to retrieve benchmark solutions. The trial follows Microsoft’s wider push to route tasks across OpenAI, Anthropic and its own MAI models. Copilot is becoming a model-orchestration platform, with cost, performance and workload fit determining which model answers each request.

OpenAI trains an AI attacker to harden GPT-5.6

OpenAI has built GPT-Red, an internal model trained through self-play to attack other AI systems with prompt injections and expose weaknesses before release. Its attacks are then used to adversarially train production models, including GPT-5.6. OpenAI says GPT-Red outperformed human testers on a held-out challenge. Notion turns the workspace into an operating layer for agents

Notion’s new Developer Platform pushes the product beyond documents and databases towards an operating layer for workplace agents. Its Workers feature can run custom code, synchronise external data and trigger workflows on Notion’s infrastructure. Companies can also bring third-party or internally built agents into the workspace, although some capabilities remain in beta or waitlist access. Governance, permissions and sandboxing are built into the platform.

Microsoft prepares a multi-model AI security challenger

Microsoft is reportedly developing Project Perception, an enterprise security product that would use models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Microsoft to scan systems, identify vulnerabilities and recommend fixes. The multi-model design is intended to match each task with the most suitable and economical model. If launched as described, it would compete directly with Anthropic’s Mythos.

Google expands its lower-cost Gemini model line-up

Google has released three models aimed at faster, cheaper agentic workloads. Try Claude Fable 5 before 22 June.

This is the one release worth making time for. Anthropic says Fable 5 is included at no extra cost on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans until 22 June, after which it moves to usage credits unless capacity allows an extension.

Do not test it on generic prompts. Give it one difficult piece of real work that normally takes concentration and context: a messy diligence document, a product spec, a complex spreadsheet explanation, a codebase issue, a board-paper rewrite, or a market-map synthesis. Ask it to show assumptions, identify gaps, and produce a usable first draft.

The point is not whether it sounds clever. The test is whether it gets you materially closer to a decision or deliverable than your current model.

Turn on ChatGPT Lockdown Mode for confidential work.

This is less exciting than a new model, but probably more important for day-to-day business use. If your team uses ChatGPT for client documents, legal correspondence, market research, board papers or anything commercially sensitive, Lockdown Mode is a sensible default.

It reduces exposure to indirect prompt-injection attacks by restricting network behaviour, including internet image fetching, file downloads, Deep Research and Agent Mode. That will break some workflows, so use it where confidentiality matters most rather than across everything blindly.

A good rule of thumb: if the input would make you uncomfortable sitting in someone else’s inbox, use the more restricted mode.

SpaceX prices the year’s biggest IPO at around $135 a share

SpaceX is expected to price its IPO at around $135 a share this week ahead of trading on Friday 12 June, against a $1.75 trillion target valuation. The Information’s pre-IPO subscriber Q&A on Wednesday set the pricing-week schedule. Pricing-week conditions are not gentle: the Nasdaq has fallen 5% over the past week, with interest-rate and Iran-war concerns layered on top. Goldman Sachs, the lead bank, told investors it expects SpaceX revenue to reach $474 billion by 2030 from $18.7 billion last year, two-thirds of it from AI. Build a simple AI cost control sheet before your next pilot. The Alphabet raise and Mythos token burn are two sides of the same problem: AI is powerful, but the infrastructure and inference costs are not abstract. Before starting a new pilot, build a one-page cost model covering expected users, calls per day, average tokens per call, model price, monthly run-rate and a hard stop-loss threshold. This does not need to be perfect. It just needs to stop “successful” experiments becoming surprise invoices.

Install ChatGPT for Excel on one low-risk workbook and run a controlled test. Pick a non-confidential spreadsheet your team already understands: a pipeline tracker, board KPI pack, budget template or customer-call tracker. Ask ChatGPT to explain the workbook structure, identify the key drivers, flag broken formulas, and suggest clean-up steps. Then ask it to make one contained update, such as adding a scenario tab or standardising inconsistent labels, but require it to outline the cells and tabs it plans to change before editing. Measure three things: time saved, quality of explanation, and whether the workbook remained auditable afterwards.

Test Codex on one white-collar artefact, not just code. The new Codex plug-ins are a useful prompt to test AI on a proper business deliverable: a sales account plan, market summary, board update, investment note, dashboard spec or product brief. Give it source material, ask for a first usable version, then review what it got wrong. The aim is not automation for its own sake. The aim is to find where an agent can create a better starting point than a blank page.

Look for one workflow where AI is becoming native, not bolted on. Meta’s creator assistant, ChatGPT for Excel, Microsoft Scout in Teams, OpenAI Codex on AWS and Google’s fake call detection all point in the same direction: the next wave of AI adoption will happen inside existing tools and platforms. Pick one workflow in your business and ask three questions. Where does the work already happen? What data would an assistant need to touch? What to Try This Week

You do not need to pick a side in the OpenAI versus Anthropic versus Google argument to benefit from this week. Three things are worth a serious hour of testing before Friday.

1. Test GPT-5.5 on a real piece of work. At Lighthouse this is back as our fave LLM. It launched on 23 April to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users in ChatGPT and Codex, with a 400K context window and a noticeably faster response mode. Greg Brockman called it “a new class of intelligence”. The honest test is not the demo videos. Give it a strategy memo, a complicated spreadsheet analysis, a long board pack, or a multi-step research brief and judge it on output. API access is still listed as “coming very soon”, so for now this is a ChatGPT-only test.

2. Pilot DeepSeek V4 on a routine workflow. Finally - DeepSeek released V4-Pro and V4-Flash as fully open-weight models on 24 April. V4-Flash runs at roughly $0.28 per million output tokens, which is a fraction of what Western frontier models cost, and the quality is now in the same conversation as GPT-5.4 on coding and reasoning benchmarks (third-party verification still pending). For non-sensitive, high-volume tasks (document summarisation, first-draft research, simple agent loops) it is worth running V4-Flash in parallel against your current model and comparing on the cost-per-acceptable-output metric. This is the first credible “drop in for cheap” option in months.

3. Use Gemini’s new direct file generation. Google rolled this out globally on 29 April. You can now ask Gemini to produce a .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, PDF or Markdown file directly from a chat prompt and either download it or save it to Drive. This eliminates the “Prompt, then paste into Word, then reformat” workflow that most teams still run. For anyone using Google Workspace, it is a free productivity upgrade available right now. Test it on something real: a one-pager from a research note, a budget table from a transcript, a draft slide outline from a brief.

For leadership teams, there is a fourth thing worth doing. The end of OpenAI–Microsoft exclusivity means your AI procurement is now a genuine competitive process for the first time. Microsoft and OpenAI dissolve exclusive partnership

On Monday 27 April Microsoft and OpenAI announced a fundamental rewrite of their partnership. Microsoft’s licence to OpenAI IP runs to 2032 but is now non-exclusive. What to Try This Week

You do not need a full AI transformation programme to get value from this week’s releases. Three tools stood out in real use. Claude Opus 4.7 is noticeably stronger for complex writing, reasoning and coding tasks. ChatGPT Images 2.0 is materially better at producing usable visuals and handling text in-image. Claude Design is the surprise package: early, but already good enough to test for first-draft slides, one-pagers and visual concepts.

1. Test Claude Opus 4.7 on a real piece of work
Give it something that actually matters: a board memo, a strategy note, a market summary or a messy spreadsheet analysis. The improvement is most obvious on multi-step tasks where weaker models lose structure or nuance. Judge it on output quality, not on benchmarks.

2. Compare ChatGPT Images 2.0 against your current design workflow
Use it to create a LinkedIn graphic, newsletter image, event visual or presentation slide concept. It is not just better at aesthetics; it is also better at following instructions and rendering text cleanly. For many teams, that may be enough to reduce reliance on separate image tools for everyday work.

3. Give Claude Design one hour of serious testing
Ask it to turn a rough idea into a one-pager, sales leave-behind, prototype or presentation concept. It is not replacing a designer for high-stakes brand work, but it is already good enough to accelerate first drafts and reduce blank-page time for commercial teams.

UK Government warns boards: elevate AI cyber risk now

On 15 April the UK Government published an open letter to business leaders warning that AI systems are finding vulnerabilities in cyber defences at “unprecedented speeds”, and instructing boards to treat AI cyber threats as a governance-level priority rather than a security-team problem. The letter was co-signed by ministers and echoed by techUK. It is the clearest signal yet that Whitehall expects UK boards to have tested their cyber posture against AI-augmented threats. Treat it as a compliance prompt, not a press release.

EU AI Act: 100 days to enforcement, and Brussels is under siege

The bulk of high-risk obligations under the EU AI Act become enforceable on 2 August 2026, covering risk management, data governance, transparency, human oversight and post-market monitoring. Fines can reach €35 million or 7% of global turnover. In parallel, Amnesty International and civil-society groups sent an open letter on 15 April arguing that the Act’s Omnibus simplification process is gutting core safeguards. Any UK business selling into the EU, or processing EU data, should assume the rules stick as written.

Apple transition: Tim Cook out, John Ternus in, AI the defining job

Apple confirmed on 20 April that Tim Cook will step down as CEO on 1 September. John Ternus, SVP of Hardware Engineering and a 25-year Apple veteran, takes over with the explicit remit of fixing Apple’s AI strategy. AI chief John Giannandrea left earlier in April and his responsibilities have been split across Federighi, Cue and Khan. Apple’s $4 trillion valuation now rests on whether Ternus can close the AI gap. For enterprise IT teams, expect iOS and macOS AI changes to arrive faster than planned.

Amazon locks Anthropic into AWS with $100bn ten-year deal

Amazon announced a fresh $5 billion investment in Anthropic, with up to $20 billion more to follow on commercial milestones, taking total commitment to $33 billion. In return, Anthropic has committed to spend over $100 billion on AWS over the next decade and secured up to 5 gigawatts of Trainium compute. For buyers, this is structural: Anthropic’s infrastructure future is now Amazon’s. It reinforces the case for multi-provider AI procurement and changes the posture between AWS and Microsoft in any enterprise AI deal.

SpaceX takes $60bn option on Cursor, reshapes the coding stack

On 21 April SpaceX announced a partnership with Cursor, the AI coding startup, with an option to acquire it for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for joint development work by year-end. Cursor was valued at $2.5 billion fifteen months ago. OpenAI had reportedly tried and failed to buy the company first. The deal brings Cursor into the Musk empire alongside xAI and Colossus, the 200,000-GPU supercomputer, and will force Microsoft, OpenAI and Google to respond on developer tooling pricing.

Maine passes first US statewide data centre moratorium

Maine’s legislature has approved an 18-month moratorium on new data centres requiring more than 20 megawatts, citing energy grid strain. Governor Janet Mills has a short window to sign or veto. At least 12 other states are weighing similar bills. This is the first serious US planning constraint on AI compute build-out and it lands at exactly the moment Big Tech has committed over $650 billion in AI capex for 2026. Expect the UK grid-capacity debate to intensify in parallel.

Anthropic’s Claude Mythos triggers Treasury-Fed bank summit

Anthropic disclosed that Claude Mythos, currently restricted to a consortium of around 40 partners including JPMorgan, can independently find and exploit vulnerabilities in every major operating system and browser. In testing it identified a 27-year-old OpenBSD flaw. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Fed Chair Jerome Powell convened an emergency meeting with US bank CEOs in response. The UK Government’s 15 April letter landed in the same week. If you run critical systems, this is no longer an abstract risk; it is a board reporting line that needs a named owner.

Anthropic ships Claude Opus 4.7

Released on 16 April, Claude Opus 4.7 is a direct upgrade on 4.6 with stronger software engineering performance, a new “xhigh” reasoning effort setting for complex multi-step work, and a three-times jump in multimodal resolution to 3.75 megapixels per image. A tokeniser change means prompts use slightly fewer tokens for the same content. For teams already building on Claude, it is a drop-in upgrade worth testing this week, particularly if you are running coding agents or processing diagrams, whiteboards, and document scans at scale.

Claude Design: Anthropic steps onto Figma and Canva’s turf

Anthropic launched Claude Design on 17 April as a research preview, a product for creating visual work including prototypes, slides, presentations and one-pagers directly from natural language. It turns a prompt into editable visual output and targets the workflow space currently owned by Figma, Adobe Express and Canva. Early reviews have been strong. For marketing, sales and product teams, this is worth an hour of play this week: if the output is half as good as the demos suggest, it reshapes who needs a designer in the loop.

OpenAI Codex becomes a full desktop agent, but not in the UK

OpenAI’s April Codex update transforms the product into a desktop automation agent. It now operates Mac apps autonomously with its own cursor, remembers preferences, schedules multi-day work, runs parallel agents, and pulls in 90-plus new plugins across Atlassian, GitLab and Microsoft Suite. It also generates images via gpt-image-1.5. Crucially, the desktop-agent feature is not yet available in the EU or UK. That gap is a direct consequence of the AI Act and UK regulatory posture, and worth flagging to anyone on your team running Codex workflows.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 rolls out to every paying plan

Chinese lab Moonshot released Kimi K2.6 on 21 April as a fully open-source, 1-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model, supporting 300 parallel sub-agents across 4,000 coordinated steps and 13-hour autonomous coding sessions. It tops the HLE-Full benchmark at 54.0, narrowly ahead of GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6. For UK businesses that need sovereign or on-premise deployment, this is the most capable open model to date. It matters if your compliance team cannot send data to a US-hosted API.

OpenAI GPT-Rosalind targets life sciences

xAI has put Grok 4.2 into public beta as an explicitly selectable release candidate, rather than a quiet default upgrade. That matters less for the headline than for the operating model: frontier labs are shipping fast, learning in public and iterating weekly. For enterprise users, that increases optionality, but also raises the bar on version control, testing and governance before deployment.

Cursor and Factory push enterprise coding agents to centre stage

Beyond the SpaceX deal, Cursor’s revenue has gone from $100 million to $2 billion ARR in fourteen months, described as the fastest SaaS ramp in history.
